|For the parents|
As you know, the best way for your child to maintain the reading gains they've made throughout the school year is to continue reading a variety of books throughout the summer. Safewave.org and iLAND5.com offer comprehensive book lists for your child. All of these books are available at your local public library or bookstore. Some of the books on our list have an * by the title to let you know that there is an accompanying interactive comprehensive quiz available on iLand5 for that book. This is a great way for you to assess your child's comprehension of the story. These questions include literal questions (what we call "Right There" questions whose answers can be found in the text) and critcial thinking questions (what we call "In Our Head" questions which require higher order thinking). The skills for answering both of these types of questions are necessary for comprehension.
We will be updating this list and increasing our interactive quizzes on a regular basis. Additionally, Safewave.org offers a monthly "Ask the Teacher" informative newsletter which discusses academic issues.
Please check out the book lists, interactive quizzes and "Ask the Teacher" components of Safewave.org and iLand5.com. Let us know what you think and how we can assist you with your child's academic needs.
