i5 Internet Lifeguard

Dear Child Advocate,

We know how busy you are so we have written this newsletter in quick, bite-size pieces that address the most important issues facing you today about Internet safety and related topics.

We would love your feedback and input on suggested topics that you want to learn more about. Click here to submit ideas and feedback.

Even though the use of filters and blocking software has increased 50% from just five years ago, the latest report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children states that the “increase in online harassment is unsettling”.  Click here for the full report.

The internet helps and harms students in our schools and their homes. Can we harness this power for our children’s benefit in a safe and positive way?

In this issue and the coming weeks you will be hearing about iLAND5™, the first free Network with a conscience created by educators that’s for students ages 5-18.

  • More than 90% of parents are “very or extremely” concerned about their children being exposed to sexually explicit content on the internet.
  •
  • School systems in 36 states have bully and harassment policies that include cyber bullying.

  • Click here to see National Anti Bullying Laws by state.

As a school psychologist, I know how important it is to provide the internet environment that iLAND5™ offers: a place where kids are protected from bullies and predators to have fun, interact with friends, and engage in educationally sound activities.

FREE, SAFER NETWORK WITH A CONSCIENCE

iLAND5™ goes beyond protective filters and a school website. i5 protects and creatively engages students in healthy behaviors of mutual respect, self-discipline, and compassion. The i5 online community atmosphere of respect for self, others and community property extends beyond the internet to their relationships at home, school and in their neighborhoods.

iLAND5™ delivers the benefits of the internet to students, and peace of mind to educators and parents alike.

“As a career educator, and mother whose son was tragically bullied to death, I trust iLAND5™ to keep the son I have left safe online. The wholesome and educational content makes me feel even better about the time he spends there.”

- Debbie Johnston, Initiator of Jeff’s Law and Internet Safety Advocate

CYBER BULLYING - THE IMPACT ON ATTENDANCE

Last week, The Dr. Phil Show tackled cyber bullies head on. Among his guests were a SafeWave™ volunteer outreach mom and her 17-year-old son, Andrew. This college-bound honor student told his story of how an imposter profile on MySpace caused him to skip school and be concerned about his future with colleges and employers.

Experts believe 160,000 students a day skip school as a result of bullying.

The internet is an important part of a child’s learning so we joined iLAND5.com to help our schools overcome the threats that sites like MySpace pose, particularly cyber bulling which is also a disruptive force in their education. We liked the security and wholesome content the Network provides our students and encourage schools to offer iLAND5™ to their student body.

- Alan K. Rosier, Director for Technology Services Wakulla County School Board
